Okay, I guess, mostly weird. Nevertheless, I would be lying, if I didn’t say I was hoping for the narrator to “get the girl” in the end.
The ending – the final metaphor – was very good and, actually, disturbing. The Little Seamstress is their love interest, a daughter of a village tailor, whom they are feeding forbidden Western literature in order to make her more cultured.
Only a short story, not bad but not exciting either. The re-education consists of hard manual work: E’ la storia di due giovani ragazzi che leggono di nascosto alcuni libri che sono stati proibiti dal regime di Mao, tra cui Balzac, appunto, Dumas, e molti altri. A quick read for the story, but ultimately sort of ablzac.

Perhaps I would have enjoyed the plot to rely more heavily on the whereabouts and historical context! I picked up this book because one of my best friends lent it to me.

You can also argue, that he might like the looks of the little seamstress enough to be with her and get her pregnantbut she’s not enough enough, you know?
For me, “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” is closer to a short story than anything else, because it has roughly pages which makes it finish-able in one day. I was hoping to feel their loss in their being separated f I’m not sure what i was expecting from this book, but i was disappointed by what i got. His first book, Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse chinoise Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstresswas made into a movie, inwhich he himself adapted and directed.
The stories and authors that the teenagers read have little bearing on the plot–it feels like the author is name-dropping, rather than actually showing the impact that these specific texts can have. It ended a lot different to what I expected, and I believe there could’ve been a lot more details woven into the narrative to make the book more interesting.
For instance, at one point during the story the narrator works in a coal mine, and he mentions that this brief job would cause many long-lasting ill effects, but he doesn’t say what these are.
The villagers spoke pretty poetic language, and not costkrera the kind that common, uneducated people would use because there are many kinds of poetry in the world. Luo decides that the seamstress is too uncultured and uneducated for him and he is determined to educate her and make her more sophisticated so that they can be together.

The ending is slow and boring. We get some hints that nebbish boy feels he had somehow balzxc part of a betrayal, but not enough. This surprisingly popular book is, plainly speaking, disgusting, and not just because the main villian turns out to koven Balzac and similar books, which need to be burned. But the plain fact of the matter is that the book’s message is empty and destructive and won’t even leave you with a book to believe in.
The small village on Phoenix mountain feels like a prison to the boys, their only distraction being the narrator’s violin and the local tailor’s beautiful daughter. The narrator on the other hand, keeping his distance out of respect for his best friend’s relationship with the seamstress, loves her for who she is. Secondly, the politics feel distant and abstract in the novel.
